The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, together with the Spanish Cultural Centre / Instituto Cervantes in Sydney welcome internationally renowned Architects Iñaki Ábalos and Renata Sentkiewicz of Ábalos+Sentkiewicz arquitecto to Sydney for a very special lecture.
The picturesque aesthetics strongly introduce the topic of the interiors in architecture; the refuge, the cabin, the cavern, the cave, as needs of modern man in view of the nature, surrounded by the nature. It is a double innovation, the proximity with the land not associated with the work and simultaneously the isolation, the feeling of the physical and moral weight of the geology on human knowledge. Curiously, it is a need systematicly associated with the maturity, with a certain age, as if outward appearance and exteriority were associated with the youth, and interior and isolation were the spatial forms of the maturity. Le Corbusier, Juan O'Gorman, Cesar Manrique are, already in the XXth century, exemplary of this movement from the aereal to the gravitational, from the outlook and the light to the fold in the land. In our work we have felt attracted by this slide, in the first moment of literally picturesque form, resorting to architecture excavated in the rock to expand the experience of the park in the city. Afterwards we have found in the urban infrastructures the occasion to transmute this literal idea into a kind of "public interior" that implies both an interesting thermodynamic behaviour of the buildings, and a somatic experience of the individuals. To that end we resort without establishing independent territories to the disciplines of Architecture, Landscape and Environment as an unitarian universe of creative techniques.
This will be the only chance to hear Ábalos+Sentkiewicz following the 2012 National Architecture Event in Brisbane this May.
When: Wednesday May 16 | Drinks start at 6:30pm with the lecture to commence at 7pm
Where: Drinks to be held in the New Law School Annex (http://bit.ly/ISJRRR), with lecture to follow in Theatre 101.
