performance: "José Gaspar (The Solitude of Power)"

09/06/2012

The Embassy of Paraguay and Instituto Cervantes in Sydney would like to present “José Gaspar (The solitude of Power)". It is a one-man show that reflects the philosophy of ruling of the man who is regarded as the father of the independence of Paraguay: Doctor José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia who was later proclaimed “Perpetual Dictator” (1813-1840). Also, it tells us about his confrontation with the great foreign powers of the time: Spain, England, Portugal, and Argentina as well as his discrepancies with the church and with his former mates of the independence. Most of them were deemed as traitors by the Dictator and had them executed. As the author states, “José Gaspar is the prototype of every being with an excessive longing for absolute power; an excessive ambition of power."

The sub-title “The solitude of power” refers to a moment during the play when the dictator finds himself in total decadence, alone, forsaken by those who in the proper moment took advantage of his power. It is in that moment when the dictator feels the loneliness that the proper “power” generates in his own surrounding. Likewise, this play tells us how every authoritarian government has certain characteristics that keep on repeating throughout history, no matter the moment in history or where in the world.

Finally, we can say that José Gaspar brings up that “conducting thread” that unites all the Latin American countries and make them alike in their history.

“José Gaspar” (The Solitude of Power)" was staged in Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Brasil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, United States of America, France, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain and India.

Fifty years on, Axun and Maite, now both seventy, meet up by chance while visiting patients in hospital. At first, they don't recognize one another, but soon long- suppressed feelings begin to emerge once more with the same intensity, and Axun is aware for the first time of her chance to start something entirely new. exhibition: "The Pilgrims’ Way to Santiago, the First European Cultural Itinerary"

02/07/2012 - 28/09/2012

The Pilgrims’ Way to Santiago, the First European Cultural Itinerary, is one of the greatest treasures shared by all Europeans. Part of the cultural and moral heritage not only of the West but of the whole of mankind, this ancient route has been followed by millions of people from the Middle Ages until the present day.

The audiovisual exhibition Memories of a Pilgrimage reflects the recent journey made by photographer Manuel Valcárcel and musician Alejandro González, both native Galicians, along a pilgrimage route that boasts a long-standing history buried deep in the roots of tradition. A contemporary journey that aims to discover - through all five senses - the most intimate spaces of historic sites that have the capacity to unlock much of mankind's cultural memory.

This exhibition portrays an intense journey filled with experiences that take us through Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy, Northern Spain and along the Pilgrims’ Way in Galicia. A unique pilgrimage in which both artists show their sensitivity to towns, villages and routes that are steeped in cultural and religious tradition, bringing to the fore realities that often go unnoticed or unheard, drawing attention to situations and circumstances that impact directly on the lives of those that live along the pilgrimage ways, and the simple lifestyle of the towns and cities on the route.

In 2010 and 2011 this exhibition completed its own pilgrimage to several European cities – Sofia, Bucharest, Zagreb, Santiago de Compostela-, before continuing in 2012 to visit France and now Australia.  Memories of a Pilgrimage is in essence an exhibition that reflects the cultural wealth of a Europe that has grown up around the Pilgrims’ Way to Santiago de Compostela and which is guaranteed to inspire a host of emotions and feelings in everyone that visits it.
